Home lift systems in Dubai: hydraulic, traction or screw-driven?

Compare drive systems, machine-room layout and lift format as separate decisions before shortlisting a home lift.

Lift brochures often mix several labels in one comparison. Hydraulic and traction describe drive systems; MRL describes where the machinery is arranged; platform and cabin can describe different product formats or classifications. Those labels do not create a simple three-way choice. Confirm the exact product and its intended use from the supplier’s technical documents.

Start by separating the labels

  • Drive system: examples include hydraulic, traction and screw-driven systems. The mechanism affects the equipment arrangement, but does not by itself prove that a model fits a particular villa.
  • Machine-room layout: MRL means machine-room-less. Ask where the motor, controller and service access are located for the exact model.
  • Lift format and classification: a platform lift and an enclosed cabin lift may have different intended uses, controls, travel and applicable technical requirements. Ask the supplier to identify the product category and conformity basis in writing.

Hydraulic drive

A hydraulic system uses pressurised fluid to move a piston that raises the lift car. The equipment arrangement varies by design, so “hydraulic” alone does not tell you the required pit, machine space, shaft, power or installation work.

Ask where the pump and cylinder sit, how the chosen model is serviced, what clearances and building work its drawings require, and what the quote includes for installation and aftercare. Confirm fluid inspection and maintenance requirements with the appointed service provider.

Traction drive, including MRL models

Traction systems move a car using ropes or belts over a driven sheave, commonly with a counterweight. The counterweight can balance part of the moving load, but operating energy, ride quality, speed and maintenance depend on the model and how it is used.

MRL is a machine-room arrangement, not a separate drive type. Request the layout drawing and confirm where equipment can be accessed for inspection and service. Check the model-specific shaft, pit, overhead, power and structural requirements before comparing quotations.

Screw-driven systems

Some residential lifts use a screw-and-nut mechanism. Product ranges and intended applications vary, so do not assume that every screw-driven system is a platform lift or that every model can use the same pit or enclosure arrangement.

Ask the supplier for the exact model, declared use, travel and load limits, clearances, service plan and written conformity documents. Compare those details with the people who will use the lift and the property drawings.

Platform lift or cabin lift?

Format and drive are separate questions. A platform-style product may be powered hydraulically or electrically; an enclosed cabin may use different drive systems. The words “platform” and “cabin” are not a substitute for checking the product’s classification, intended use, controls, dimensions and applicable safety requirements.

If a passenger has mobility or access needs, compare clear entry width, approach space, controls, travel, seating or attendant requirements and how the user will enter and exit at every landing. Ask an appropriate accessibility or lift professional to confirm suitability for the intended users.

Compare site facts before choosing

  • Use: who will ride, how often, and whether a mobility device or attendant must travel.
  • Route: floors served, floor-to-floor heights, landing positions and door arrangements.
  • Available space: proposed shaft or enclosure, landing circulation and access for delivery.
  • Building work: structural openings, supports, pit, overhead, electrical supply and finishes, all confirmed against model drawings.
  • Ownership: maintenance visits, parts availability, emergency support, warranty and exclusions.
  • Approvals: responsibilities and required submissions for the building and location, confirmed with the relevant appointed professionals and authorities.

Put quotations side by side

Ask each supplier to state the model and classification, number of stops, rated load, speed and travel, required clearances, supply and installation scope, civil and electrical exclusions, testing and handover, warranty, maintenance and parts support. A low equipment price is not comparable until the scope and exclusions are clear.

For an existing home, use the existing-villa site-check guide. If the lift will be part of a new build, agree its route and interfaces with the project team before structural and interior details are fixed. Browse supplier cabin design references after confirming the technical options available for the selected model.

A practical next step in Dubai

Gather the villa location, available plans, floors to connect, intended users and any access priorities. Ask the supplier or appointed technical team to inspect the site and confirm likely options against manufacturer drawings. Dimensions, performance, approvals and programme remain model- and property-specific.
